I have to apologize for being so bad at getting up my blogs! My goal as the school year starts again is to get one or more blogs up a weeks so I can get you all some great information about nutrition/exercise. I have been thinking about all the questions I get often from clients and I want to start answering in detail so all of you guys will understand the background of the answers. The first one I will start with today is…
I AM EXERCISING A LOT SO WHY IS THE NUMBER ON THE SCALE NOT GOING DOWN!??
This seems to be one of the most frustrating things for clients and honestly no one ever really likes to hear my answer. They want to see the gratification in the numbers. My answer…
WHO CARES ABOUT THE NUMBERS, HOW DO YOUR CLOTHES FIT AND HOW DO YOU FEEL?
This is a really hard thing for people to grasp!! Before I get a little deeper into this lets take a look at why people want to loose weight in the first place. Usually the reason is to look better, feel better, be healthier and fit into an old pair of jeans. Now if you stop looking at the scale and take a look at how you feel/look in clothes/ and health numbers, your usually reaching your goals and will notice a change much sooner then if you weigh yourself constantly.
Here are some reasons why scale numbers are not always important:
Reason 1: Weight fluctuates!
Depending on the time of day, how much water you have been drinking and your food intake, your weight will fluctuate a ton. I did a test the other day and for 3 days I weighted myself periodically. I fluctuated up and down within 6 lbs in those three says. This includes my morning weight each day. It was never the same, not 1 time! Now do I think I gained and lost body fat that significantly in 3 days? NO! Its just a weird part of our bodies 🙂
Reason 2: We need to be concerned about body fat percentage NOT total weight.
If you are starting to workout pretty hard and eating right you will be gaining some lean body mass (THE GOOD STUFF). This lean mass will help to burn calories and fat as time goes on. Yes, you are probably loosing fat as you change your life style but you are also gaining lean body mass. This is why I suggest doing circumference measurements and body fat measurements instead of just using the scale, you may see a difference in size of your belly before you see the scale drop down. Pay attention to how your clothes fit because you will see them getting looser! Yeah!!
Reason 3: If you want to get healthy, looking like a super model shouldn’t be your goal!
When I look at the models and media, I always like to remind myself that those girls never get to enjoy pizza (something I absolutely love)! Don’t eat it all the time but if you love something its ok to have it on a rare occasion! This thought makes me feel better 😉 If you are trying to get healthy DO not make your goal to look like a photo shopped human. You are beautiful the way God made you and sometimes paying more attention to the numbers taken at the doctor (Blood pressure, Heart rate, sugar level, HDL, LDL) will give you more motivation then looking in the mirror and on the scale each morning. Remember our goal should be to live a long HEALTHY life so we don’t have to suffer. Its disease prevention for you and your family! Use health as a motivation!
If you are struggling to look past the appearance in the mirror, then my challenge to you is to really look deep and find out why you want that. It usually is more then just simply wanting to look better, there is deeper rooted things we should be aware of if we want to achieve our goals in a healthy way! Hope this helped answer the question about the scale.
